Steve Mantle
Steve Mantle has been working with horses professionally since 1975. After graduating from high school, Steve went to work for his father at Sombrero Stables. Sombrero consisted of riding stables, hunting camps, pack outfits and colt starting: the prior a job which fell to Steve. He started an average of 30 to 40 colts every year, and the first colts that he started were from the ground up... literally! They would rope them, tie them down, and would roll them into saddles and hackamores. Steve would stand over them and a buddy would untie their legs. Up and away, they rode a lot of colts that way..... never really making it easy for the colts, but getting through a lot of horses. At that time they also had work for the horses to do, and they did eventually get gentle and go to work. They all had a job, and were worked and/orridden EVERY DAY...

They didn't know any other way, but along the line Steve was fortunate to be surrounded by some of the best Horsemen in the areaand they taught him many things. He eventually met Bryan Neubert, a man he is proud to call a friend. Things changed, the horses got gentled, and all the information that the horses had been showing Steve for so many years was now falling into place. Things were being interpreted by another Horseman, and Steve could now understand what he had bee seeing and missing...

Steve would not want to go back to the old days, but would not have wanted to miss them either. He is continually learning and changing how he works with the mustang, as they are actually the teacher and he gets the benefit of working with them and consistently watching, listening and learning from them.

Steve has been contracting to gentle mustangs for the BLM since 1998. They started with 6 to 10 yr old horses on the original pilot project for the private training program... They sent horses from 6 up to 18, which is the oldest he's ever started. They now work on weanlings up to 5 yr olds in their training program.
The current training program is connected to Bryan Neubert, with influence from Pat Mantle, Boyd Walker, and Keith Hagler. They host Bryan's clinics when possible and pick his brain for more and more of the good stuff...

Horses from the ranch can be adopted several ways:
1. In person upon approval of the BLM
2. Adopt over the internet adoption, which is an online bid process
3. In person public adoptions held in various locations in Wyoming, Montana, and Colorado.

Our training program is ACCEPTANCE, CONSISTENCY, HUMILITY, PATIENCE, AND CONTINUED EDUCATION. We welcome visitors with an appointment, and are happy to show what we do and why! We want you to adopt, and have a positive adoption, so that the colt that you adopt ultimately ends up in a positive environment...

Feel free to give us a call or email with any questions!
